About Give Green California

What is Give Green California?

Give Green California offers a platform to strategically help elect candidates at the state and local level who will champion bold policies to protect our environment and democracy, and fight for climate justice. Our aim is to make it as easy as possible for supporters to donate to climate champions in California and help us remove climate delayers from their seats of power.

The platform is modeled after the very successful GiveGreen.com, which features environmental candidates at the federal level and in other states. Give Green California fills that gap by highlighting State Senate, Assembly, and local candidates in California.

State legislative races can be just as important as — if not more important than — big-ticket seats like Congress and governor in the fight for climate justice. To implement climate action in a just, equitable way, climate solutions must be introduced at all levels of government.

By contributing through Give Green California, your contribution not only directly supports a climate-champion candidate but also sends a message that candidates don’t need money from oil and gas to get elected — because the power of the environmental and climate justice movements are firmly behind them.

FAQ

While California is a historically “blue” state with a Democratic majority, it is also an oil and gas state. Some of the country’s top oil-producing wells are found right here in California. The oil and gas lobby is powerful and entrenched in our politics: 52% of legislators in the last state legislature took oil money in their campaigns, including 38% of Democrats!

We no longer have the luxury of incremental change. We cannot afford to elect more legislators who will ignore the most pressing issue of our time and cave to corporate special interests.

Despite the consequences of climate change on full display, from hurricanes and floods to wildfires and extreme heat, and a super majority of Democrats, the California Legislature failed to pass meaningful climate policy between 2019 and 2021 that matched the urgency of the climate crisis.

Thankfully, in 2022 California had a historic year for climate action, and 2023 saw some monumental victories. But the fight is far from over, and we need to increase the pace.

Corporate polluters like the fossil fuel industry empty their war chest and spend BIG to defeat the environmental movement, whether it’s at the ballot box in elections across the state or over climate legislation that would move us closer to a clean energy economy and phase out fossil fuels. For instance, in 2022, Oil and Gas spent over $34 million on campaigns and lobbying (and that’s only from what we can see!) compared to just $18 million from progressive coalitions.

We’ll never defeat corporate polluters dollar for dollar, but we will defeat them because we are organized, strategic, and part of a powerful movement fighting for the right cause. With your support, we can keep up our momentum and make the California legislature an unstoppable force for climate action.

The key to passing transformative climate legislation in the California legislature comes down to one number: 62. That's 21 of the 40 votes in the Senate and 41 of 80 votes in the Assembly, equaling a 62-seat climate majority.  We call this plan to shift the balance of power in California from corporate-aligned politicians to a true climate majority the Path to 62.

A 62-seat majority of climate champions in the state legislature would introduce and support bold solutions year after year so we can have a real shot at beating the 2030 deadline scientists have given us to avert major climate catastrophe.

With your help, we can secure this 62-seat environmental majority in the California legislature in the 2024 election that will lay the groundwork for global climate leadership for years to come.

YES. Just because it’s in the name, Give Green California isn’t only for Californians. California is not just another state in the union; it is the fifth largest economy in the world. From phasing out gas-powered cars to our robust 30x30 public lands conservation plans to forcing corporations to disclose their climate emissions, when California leads, other states and nations follow suit. It’s up to us to ensure California continues to demonstrate a global roadmap for climate action so that governments around the world can see what is possible.

Climate justice acknowledges the idea that the consequences of the effects of climate change aren’t equally felt or experienced by all people. The term challenges us to recognize the disproportionate burden born by the most vulnerable people and communities, and compels us to understand that climate change exacerbates social inequity and informs how we tackle the crisis.
