SB 580: Giving parks their full due
In these challenging times, when our state parks are suffering huge budget cuts and massive closures, it is important to safeguard this multi-million dollar public asset. Existing law does not provide a clear, unambiguous policy for protecting state parks. SB 580 (Wolk) would have mandated that state park lands cannot be used for non-park purposes unless there is no practical alternative to using those lands and either: replacement lands are provided, or a combination of replacement lands and monetary compensation is offered. Proponents will continue to advocate for maintaining the investment that taxpayers have made in this system in the 2012 session.
