Term limits: a monumental failure

When California voters passed term limits in 1990, we were convinced that fresh faces and new ideas were going to be a vast improvement over the entrenched career politicians getting fat with power from the safety of incumbency. Guess what? We were wrong.

Term limits have been a failure. With a maximum of 6 years in the Assembly and 8 in the Senate, legislators don’t gain the experience required to tackle the big policy challenges facing California. To complicate matters, at least 1/3 of the legislature turns over every 2 years! This is lunacy. Californians need lawmakers that are spending more time solving our state’s problems, not looking for their next career move, or going to endless fundraisers to keep the job they have in Sacramento.
