It’s official: California has joined the growing movement to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United decision.

Thanks to your support, the State Senate passed a resolution calling upon the U.S. Congress to pass a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. You joined more than 50,000 petition signers urging lawmakers to preserve constitutional rights for people – NOT for corporations like Big Oil and Big Coal. Elected officials in Sacramento heard you loud and clear.

This victory is an important step forward, and it’s crucial to build the movement to overturn Citizens United. Help us keep up the pressure by making a contribution today. Donate here. »

Momentum is growing. With your help in passing Assembly Joint Resolution 22 (AJR 22), California became the sixth state to officially call upon the U.S. Congress to pass a constitutional amendment to overturn the Citizens United ruling. Similar resolutions have been introduced or passed in 26 states and more than 250 cities and towns nationwide. And we joined forces with organizations including Public Citizen, Common Cause, California PIRG, CREDO Mobile, California Church IMPACT, Free Speech for People, California Labor Federation, and many others for a stronger movement.

More and more people are recognizing that the Supreme Court’s decision poses a frightening threat to our democracy and way of life. When corporations are granted the same rights as people, nothing prevents greedy polluter interests from spending unlimited amounts of cash to influence political campaigns.

You and I both know that unlimited spending does more than “influence” politics. From campaign contributions to Super PACs, unlimited cash becomes the driving political force. Citizens United essentially empowered corporations to buy elections, but we’re not going to stand by and let them do it.

In this pivotal moment, we need your help to overturn Citizens United. Make your donation today.

The good news is the California League of Conservation Voters has worked for more than 40 years to elect the best possible champions for California’s environment. With your help, we’ll continue to level the playing field, providing environmental candidates with the critical resources to be competitive. Despite being regularly outspent by the same polluters who are thrilled with the Citizens United decision, we help environmental champions win the toughest races.

But in 2010 alone, corporate-backed groups spent $300 million in an effort to buy our elections. This total will certainly rise for 2012. You can see where this is going – and why we’re counting on you to help stop it.

Thanks for all you do to protect our democracy and our environment,
