CLCV Proudly Honors SunPower CEO Tom Werner

Tom Werner is CEO of SunPower Corporation, which designs, manufactures and delivers the highest efficiency, highest reliability solar panels and systems available in the world, according to industry experts.

Werner and SunPower have been making headlines for the ways they are transforming energy use and consumption in the United States; most recently, for SunPower’s world-record breaking efficiency solar cell. Offering efficiencies of up to 24 percent was one piece of the good news; the other was that the company is actually getting the high-performing cells into products and on the market.

Werner was recently quoted when Apple announced it would use only green power — including equipment made by SunPower — at its main U.S. data center, taking steps to address longtime environmental concerns about the dirty energy powering its data centers:

“SunPower will take a bite out of Apple’s environmental impact with our highest efficiency solar at their North Carolina data center, the nation’s largest privately-owned solar array.”

SunPower also does its part to give back, particularly in California communities. The company’s foundation partnered with nonprofit “One Million Lights” to launch “One Million Students” a solar energy education program for K-12 students.

And now, solar energy leader Tom Werner is CLCV’s most recent recipient of our Environmental Leadership Awards.

he SunPower Foundation and One Million Lights, a Palo Alto-based nonprofit that provides solar lighting to rural communities around the world, have just teamed up to launch One Million Students, a solar energy education program for K-12 schools.

“The program provides educators with grade-appropriate curriculum structured to increase student understanding of how solar works and how it is being applied to generate clean, renewable energy in locations around the world.”

Prior to joining SunPower, Werner held the position of CEO of Silicon Light Machines, Inc., an optical solutions subsidiary of Cypress Semiconductor Corporation.

Previously, Tom Werner was vice president and general manager of the Business Connectivity Group of 3Com Corp., a network solutions company. He has also held a number of executive management positions at Oak Industries, Inc., and General Electric Co., and currently serves as a board member of Cree, Inc., Silver Spring Networks, and Silicon Valley Leadership Group.

Tom Werner may work hard, but he also plays hard: He is an active cyclist, swimmer, and runner, who has successfully completed several Ironman-distance triathlons and numerous marathons.

CLCV is thrilled to present Tom Werner with our Environmental Leadership Award this week at our annual gala in San Francisco.
