Why the EPA needs California

For the first time in our nation’s history, the Environmental Protection Agency plans to place limits on carbon pollution for new power plants.

Coal and gas-burning power plants are the top contributors to carbon pollution in the U.S., and yet we have never set a limit on how much pollution they can produce. More than any other contributing factor, reckless carbon pollution is causing worldwide temperatures to rise with dangerous, widespread consequences. Now is our chance to lead the way on the greatest challenge that we, and our children, all face – climate change.

It won’t happen without us.

Corporate polluters are not going to take this lying down, and anti-environment Senators led by Mitch McConnell have already tried to force a vote to strike it down. This will be an uphill struggle. Now is the time for the EPA to hear from the nation’s most active supporters of climate change solutions – California voters. Join me in telling the EPA to stand strong against its opponents and move forward with the limits on power plant pollution.

Here in California we’re used to leading the way on climate change. Many of the proposed policies in President Obama’s Climate Action Plan were born here in California. And we’ve already made great strides in reducing greenhouse gas emissions here in our state.

Right now, though, we need to speak up and push the rest of the country to follow our lead and tackle the challenges of climate change, starting with the biggest contributors to carbon pollution.

EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy is currently taking comments on the proposal, so California  has an incredible opportunity to make our voices heard: Tell Administrator McCarthy that you support the proposed limits on power plant pollution and that you want the EPA to continue to take bold action on climate change.

You and I have already glimpsed the disastrous effects of climate change. California is in the middle of a record-breaking drought. We’ve seen unprecedented heat waves, floods and wildfires. We owe it to our children to fight right now for the clean air, rushing rivers, pebbled beaches and places to play that will only be protected if we push for our government to take bold, decisive action on climate change.

The EPA’s proposed regulations are long overdue, and a major step forward for our country. Don’t let anti-environment Senators, corporate polluters, and other climate deniers bully the EPA into stalling on this crucially important issue: Tell the EPA that you support their proposal to regulate power plant pollution.
