Dear Assemblymember:

As your constituent, I urge you to support Assembly Bill 493, authored by Assemblymember Ira Ruskin. This important bill would create the Clean Car Discount Program, a market-based solution to put cleaner cars on the road by making them more affordable.

It's a straightforward and effective way to reduce California's impact on global warming. The clean car program adds surcharges to the price of cars and trucks with higher levels of greenhouse gas emissions, and gives rebates to people who buy vehicles with lower emission levels. Low-income buyers and small businesses are exempt, and the program funds itself.

Since transportation accounts for fully 40% of California's greenhouse gas emissions, AB 493 is a critical way to reach our global warming reductions. AB 493 is now an even more necessary tool to reduce global warming pollution from cars and trucks in light of the U.S. EPA's recent denial of the waiver for California to regulate greenhouse gases from vehicles.
