Groundswell is the newsletter for members of the California League of Conservation Voters.
On Wednesday, December 2, CLCV will present the 16th Annual CLCV Environmental Leadership Awards Gala in Los Angeles: From Schoolhouse to Statehouse: Creating Champions for the Environment. Our honorees are creating healthier, more sustainable communities, nurturing youth leadership skills, and contributing to our mission of identifying, cultivating, and electing environmental champions to statewide office.
The event will honor California Assembly Speaker Karen Bass; Nury Martinez, Los Angeles Unified School District school board member and Executive Director of Pacoima Beautiful; and Green Dot Charter Schools.
Assembly Speaker Karen Bass is the first African American woman and the first Democratic woman to be elected Speaker. The Speaker has a near-perfect environmental voting record and has successfully resisted rollbacks to key environmental policies like blocking new offshore oil drilling in this year’s budget. In her district she created the People’s Council in order to educate constituents and involve them in the political process.
Nury Martinez serves on the Los Angeles Unified School District school board and is the Executive Director of Pacoima Beautiful. Through programs such as the Pacoima Beautiful Youth Environmentalists, Pacoima Beautiful has been working to provide environmental education, advocacy and local leadership training in order to foster a healthy and safe environment.
Green Dot is a Los Angeles charter school program -- with a significant focus on the environment that works with the Los Angeles Unified School District to change the nature of schools and school facilities. All of Green Dot’s permanent facilities will be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified, and they are opening a new school this fall, the ACE Academy, which will prepare students for green-collar jobs in architecture, construction and engineering.
