Pump Up Environmental Protection
Since his inauguration last November, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's record on environmental issues has been encouraging. He has openly acknowledged the importance of protecting the environment and, refuting a common anti-environmental argument, noted in his first State of the State address that job creation does not conflict with environmental protection. CLCV will extend Governor Schwarzenegger our full support when he takes meaningful action on environmental issues but will hold him accountable when he strays from the best interests of Californians.
Governor Schwarzenegger's Environmental Action Plan, issued during his campaign, is ambitious. (Read his platform here.) He promises to cut California's air pollution by 50%, protect the state's global warming legislation, promote a speedy adoption of the state's renewable energy mandate, and protect our forests by implementing the Sierra Nevada Accord, among other promises.
The Governor now faces his moment of truth. Is he a revolutionary Teddy Roosevelt-style Republican who will protect the environment and begin to moderate the extreme anti-environmental direction of the state party, or is he more of what we've come to expect?
What You Can Do
Now that our priority bills have passed the legislature, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger must sign them into law. Encourage him to sign the following bills (find out more about each by clicking on the bill number):
- AB 2042 will reduce port pollution.
- AB 923 will increase funding to reduce diesel emissions.
- SB 391 will make pesticide drift offenders cover their victims' medical costs.
Simply write, fax, or email him at the following addresses, urging him to sign all of these bills. A handwritten letter is most effective.
