Dear Secretary Veneman and Forest Service Chief Bosworth:
Please accept this letter as official public comment for the roadless area management state petition proposal [Docket Number: 04-16191].
I strongly oppose the Forest Service proposal (36 CFR Part 294.12) to weaken the Roadless Area Conservation Rule. I want to see America’s 58.5 million acres of roadless areas protected from logging, roadbuilding and other industrial activities. With a $10 billion road maintenance backlog in National Forests, building new roads is a flagrant waste of tax money.
Our national forests are far more valuable to our country if left standing. Roadless areas provide an estimated $600 million per year in recreational benefits. Our forests also provide clean drinking water for more than 60 million Americans, and vital habitat for more than 220 endangered plant and animal species. It is crucial that these lands be protected for future generations.
As an American taxpayer, I insist that you stop serving the interests of the timber and energy industries over that of the American people and abandon this ill-advised proposal. Keep the Roadless Area Conservation Rule intact! I also strongly urge you to reinstate the rule’s protections for the Tongass and Chugach National Forests in Alaska.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Your name and address
