OAKLAND, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement ahead of Earth Day 2024. The 2023 California Green Innovation Index shows that California must triple its annual carbon emissions reductions to achieve its 2030 target.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, California Environmental Voters:

“With Californians facing unprecedented climate impacts, from rising temperatures and worsening droughts to deadly atmospheric rivers and escalating extreme wildfires, we stand at a pivotal moment in history as we commemorate Earth Day 2024.

Today, we celebrate all the progress made, from reducing carbon emissions to preserving biodiversity, remembering that every step forward and every policy change brings us closer to a healthier, more resilient future. At the same time, we must acknowledge the urgency of our mission and act accordingly.

Our 2030 deadline is not just a goal—it’s a call to action, a promise to each other and our planet, and a legacy for generations to come. This Earth Day, let’s recommit ourselves to action and work towards a cleaner, more equitable future that includes creating a green economy with good-paying union jobs, protecting access to healthcare, and ending our fossil fuel dependency.”

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all. Join us at www.envirovoters.org and on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. See more press releases.
