CLCV has mounted a campaign for several months to oppose Cynthia Tuck, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's industry-connected nominee for chair of the California Air Resources Board. In a major victory for the environment, the California Senate voted 24-15 today to deny Tuck's confirmation, just two days after CLCV's most recent call to action.
In response to our August 30th E-newsletter, CLCV members sent 400 email messages opposing Tuck to 36 of the 40 Senators in just over 48 hours. CLCV also generated hundreds of calls and letters in our ongoing Member Action Campaign, in which we call our members and pass you directly through to your legislators. We also worked closely with our partners in the environmental community.
The position of Chair of CARB is again vacant and the Governor will have to make another appointment to fill the vacancy. We have done our best to make the Governor aware that the environmental community takes this leadership position very seriously and that we will be watching his choice closely.
Those of you who took action contributed significantly to this victory. Thank you for your ongoing support and participation! Look for more updates from CLCV and opportunities to weigh in as the legislative session comes to a close on September 9th, giving the governor until October 9th to sign the environmental legislation that reaches his desk.
