Environment wins big; Proposition 90, Pombo defeated
94% of CLCV-endorsed candidates win: Thank you!
Jerry McNerney's victory is a powerful response to Pombo's consistent attacks on our coastline, parks and air quality. Pombo learned the hard way that California voters demand representatives who promote environmental protection, not the big oil agenda.
—Susan Smartt, CLCV Executive Director
Two losses on Election Day equaled huge wins for the environment when Jerry McNerney defeated Congressman Richard Pombo (R-Tracy) and voters rejected Prop 90.
Pombo, a 7-term incumbent and chairman of the House Resources Committee, is widely known as one of the most openly hostile members of Congress on environmental issues and was the top target for the environmental community nationwide.
Proposition 90, an extreme property rights initiative that would have cost taxpayers billions of dollars in litigation and would have made it virtually impossible for cities to plan, was also voted down on Election Day. Californians understood that Prop 90 was a brazen attack on the environment and our quality of life, and they thoughtfully voted against it.
Though State Treasurer Phil Angelides lost in his bid for governor, all of the remaining CLCV-endorsed statewide candidates won their races; and the success of Proposition 84 means more open space and clean water for Californians. See all of our endorsements and results.
Your support was critical in our many environmental victories. Your generous contributions allowed CLCV to play a leading role in getting the No on 90 message out to voters; thanks to you, Californians ultimately didn't fall into the taxpayer trap and environmental nightmare that was Prop 90. And your grassroots activism and CLCV's investment in Jerry McNerney's campaign played a large role in defeating Richard Pombo.
We couldn't have done it without our many supporters. Thank you!
