This is big, California!

Governor Jerry Brown just signed into law the statewide ban on single-use plastic bags, SB 270! Californians who care about protecting our environment and ending the scourge of wasteful, polluting plastic bags in our beautiful state -- that's YOU -- made the difference. This is your victory and you should be proud of our movement.

We see it happening every election. A member of the legislature fights for clean air and clean water on behalf of his constituents. Big Oil decides it needs to take him out and spends a ridiculous amount of money to try to elect someone who won’t represent his constituents.

Just minutes ago, I stood in Governor Jerry Brown's office while he signed historic legislation regulating California groundwater.

Incredibly, until today, California was the only western state without groundwater regulations. One would expect firefighters would know a thing or two about fire safety. So when they speak up and tell the state legislature that adding pounds of flame retardant chemicals to single pieces of furniture doesn't protect them, or folks whose houses or businesses catch fire, and in fact puts their lives MORE at risk, you would hope our lawmakers would listen.

The state legislature passed a new $7.5 billion water bond on August 13, 2014.

CLCV released a statement from CEO Sarah Rose on the water bond's passage:

Washing your face and brushing your teeth are daily activities that shouldn’t cause harm to our environment. Unfortunately, tiny plastic beads in some personal care products are entering our local streams and rivers directly from our sinks – and they're eventually found in the ocean and inside the bodies of marine wildlife.

Remember how we said Big Oil was up to its old tricks?
