The Honorable Fabian Núñez

Speaker of the Assembly, (D-46th District)

Speaker Fabian Núñez was first elected to the California State Assembly in 2002 to represent the 46th Assembly District. He was sworn in as Assembly Speaker in February 2004.

As the father of three children, Speaker Núñez is deeply committed to preserving and protecting California’s precious natural resources for future generations. He also clearly understands that environmental quality and economic vitality are directly linked. Under his leadership, last session, several significant environmental and natural resource bills moved to the Governor’s desk, including legislation to reduce vehicle air pollution, protect North Coast fisheries, and establish the Sierra Nevada Conservancy.

This legislative session, Speaker Núñez is again proactively working to address California’s long-term energy, environmental, infrastructure, and healthcare needs. The Speaker is currently sponsoring three bills that will enact key reforms to our state’s energy system as well as measures that will extend health coverage to a greater number of young adults, improve the tracking of hazardous waste traveling by railroad, and assist the metal plating industry with environmental compliance through a technology financing program. With more than 1,000 metal plating shops located throughout California, most of which are small businesses in communities of color, this legislation represents a real solution to a critical environmental justice problem.

Recently, the Speaker unveiled his “Build Opportunity” plan which provides an immediate, $10 billion investment in our state’s transportation infrastructure. This innovative plan also includes funding to relieve traffic congestion which will directly result in improved air quality. Improving the state’s air quality will benefit the thousands of Californians who suffer from asthma and other air pollution-related illnesses.

Last year, Speaker Núñez received 100% on the 2004 CLCV scorecard and was honored as one of CLCV’s Freshmen 100 for his outstanding environmental leadership.
