California League of Conservation Voters Endorses Debra Bowen for Congress

LOS ANGELES & OAKLAND, Calif. (March 30, 2011) – The California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV)—the non-partisan political arm of the environmental movement in California—today announced its endorsement of Debra Bowen in the special election for Congressional District 36. CLCV cited Bowen’s strong environmental record and her courage to stand up to special interests as reasons for the endorsement.

“CLCV is proud to endorse Debra Bowen to become California’s next member of Congress,” said CLCV Chief Executive Officer Warner Chabot. “As our current Secretary of State and as a former member of California’s Assembly and state Senate, Debra Bowen has a long record of leadership on protecting the environment and the public’s health, as well as improving public access to election information crucial to equal and fair participation in the democratic process.”

Bowen received an impressive 96% lifetime score on CLCV’s Environmental Scorecard for her votes on priority environmental legislation while serving as a state legislator. While in the Assembly, Bowen served as Chair of the Assembly Natural Resources Committee. As a state Senator, Bowen helped pass AB 32, the groundbreaking law that made California a global leader in the fight against climate change and for clean energy. The author of AB 32, Senator Fran Pavley, has also endorsed Bowen for CD 36.

“Debra Bowen will bring a common sense approach to Congress that recognizes our environment as a resource that needs to be protected not just for environmental reasons, but for economic and public health reasons as well,” said CLCV Board President Tom Adams.

“I’m honored to have the endorsement of the California League of Conservation Voters,” said Bowen. “As a member of Congress, I will continue to stand up to the special interests that threaten the quality of our air, water and coastline, and fight for a stronger national energy policy focused on conservation, alternative energy development, and green jobs.”
