The evening of Thursday, November 30, 2006, the California League of Conservation Voters’ 13th Annual Environmental Leadership Awards Gala celebrated an extraordinary group of honorees for their work in Creating a Climate for Change.
At Smashbox Studios in Culver City, we recognized the team responsible for bringing us the film An Inconvenient Truth (Vice President Al Gore, director Davis Guggenheim, the producers Laurie David, Lawrence Bender, Scott Z. The Honorees:
The Honorable Al Gore has been a pioneer in efforts to protect the environment and combat global warming since his days in the House and Senate. As the 45th Vice President, Gore led the Clinton administration’s efforts to protect the global environment and authored a best selling book on the topic, Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit (1992). He is a visionary leader on a crusade to focus the world’s attention on global warming and to generate the political will to find creative solutions. His leadership and dedication has culminated with his book and movie, An Inconvenient Truth. CLCV proudly presents Vice President Al Gore with the Byron Sher Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding environmental record and dedication to the cause.
Throughout his directing and producing career, Davis Guggenheim has received wide recognition for his extraordinary documentary work to raise awareness of national issues. As the director of An Inconvenient Truth, Guggenheim has created a means to communicate Former Vice President Al Gore’s global warming message in a poignant and engaging manner that viewers cannot ignore.

Lawrence Bender, Al Gore, and Lesley Chilcott
This is not the first time producers Laurie David, Lawrence Bender, Scott Z. Burns, and Lesley Chilcott have combined their creative talents in the fight against global warming. These four leaders, along with other environmentalists, founded The Detroit Project, which disclosed the truth about energy consumption. In their latest endeavor, An Inconvenient Truth, these producers challenge and elevate the public’s perception of one of the biggest moral challenges facing our global civilization.
Assemblymember Fran Pavley is the author of two groundbreaking bills to reduce global warming; she truly epitomizes environmental leadership in the California Assembly. Her courage in standing up to and demanding cleaner technologies from some of the country’s largest industries not only created a better California but resonated across states and, indeed, around the world. Her landmark climate change bill, AB 1493, has now been enacted in ten other states and Canada. Her 2006 bill, AB 32, has received worldwide attention and will ensure that California will lead the way in addressing climate change with creative solutions that are good for the planet and our economy.
