Statement by California League of Conservation Voters CEO Sarah Rose on the passage of SB 350 on Friday, September 11:

"California has once again made history by passing the boldest, farthest reaching climate change legislation in the nation: SB 350. We thank the bill author, Pro Tem Kevin de León, for his tremendous leadership and determination. We also thank our more than 100,000 members, whose tremendous outpouring of grassroots support and activism made it clear to the legislature that the public stands firmly in favor of meaningful action on clean air, clean energy and climate change. We’re making climate history in California right now, but we have more to do. The passage of SB 350 is a major political achievement for the climate movement, but as the final outcome for this legislative year, it’s not good enough. Lawmakers had the chance to pass an even stronger version of SB 350, but they gave in to oil industry demands to strip the bill of language requiring aggressive reductions in petroleum use throughout the state. Overall, the state legislature fell short of our aim – and short of what scientists say is necessary to slow climate change and protect our communities from harmful impacts. CLCV will continue to fight for a 50% reduction in petroleum by 2030 while working to elect climate champions in 2016 who will prioritize California’s transition away from polluting fossil fuels and towards clean, renewable energy that makes it possible for all our communities to enjoy a better quality of life in the Golden State."

The political muscle of the environmental movement in America’s leading environmental state, the California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) is the nation’s oldest grassroots environmental political action organization. CLCV uses sophisticated campaign tools to help elect pro-environment officials and to hold them accountable for passing legislation to protect health, communities and the environment. CLCV publishes the annual California Environmental Scorecard, which rates the actions of every state legislator and the governor on the state’s environmental priorities each legislative year.
