OAKLAND – The California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV), the political arm of California’s environmental movement, today announced its endorsement of former Vice President Biden for President of the United States. Mary Creasman CEO of CLCV issued the following statement:

“We have witnessed a historic primary presidential election – nearly 30 candidates campaigned across our country to push for bold solutions and elevate critical policies to improve the daily lives of every American. We witnessed candidates introduce ambitious climate plans that meet where we are in bracing for the worst impacts of the climate crisis. For the first-time, candidates also took issues of environmental justice and equity seriously and proposed plans to address these issues.

At CLCV, we are strong believers that only by transforming our political system will we create the opportunity to take bold action on climate and we are extremely grateful for all the candidates and campaign organizers who worked so hard to put climate justice values at the forefront of this election. During this pandemic, our families and communities are paying the price of having a president who refuses to believe science and experts and prioritizes the well-being of polluters and corporations over public health. California climate progress is also at risk due to federal legal battles over vehicle emission standards and critical environmental protections that have not only protected our environment, but built our economy. Too much is at stake for Californians for us to sit back and not help bring a strong, unified coalition to defeat Donald Trump. We simply cannot have another four years of the Trump Administration.

This election cycle is about so much more than winning back the White House. With less than 10 years left to transform our economy and infrastructure to prepare for and protect against the climate crisis, it has become about fighting for our future and a brighter, more just reality. The person to lead this fight is now former Vice President Joe Biden. Vice President Biden will not only bring years of experience to the White House, but the character and compassion that Donald Trump lacks. Vice President Biden has dedicated his life to public service, has a track record of fighting for the underdog and uplifting families. He also has a proven track record on climate and will restore U.S. participation in the landmark Paris Climate agreement and will fight with California - not against - in establishing critical emissions standards.

We are proud to endorse Vice President Biden and look forward to working with his campaign to find solutions to fix our climate crisis and strengthen our democracy. As California overwhelmingly supported Senator Bernie Sanders, and recent polling shows that addressing the climate crisis the top priority of California voters, we are eager to work with the Vice President’s campaign team to strengthen his climate plan to meet the rate and scale of action necessary and to ensure we are advancing social and environmental justice with every investment. As the campaign enters the next stage, we will continue to advocate for policies that will help build a new green economy that creates new jobs but that brings good-paying, equitable jobs that leaves no community behind. Come November, our country will need a leader that listens to science and prepares versus reacts to crisis, and we look forward to helping elect Joe Biden as that leader.”

We believe that radical change is necessary and only by transforming our political system will we create the opportunity to take bold action on climate change. We elect and cultivate environmental champions, turn election victories into policy wins, hold our lawmakers accountable, and build political power for change. We inspire hope and action and fight for equity and justice for all Californians. We are in the business of changing what’s possible.
