OAKLAND, CA - The California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) released the following statement on the Senate confirmation of Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, CLCV:

“Secretary Haaland’s confirmation is a historic moment for our country. After four years of harmful policies and rollbacks, Secretary Haaland is an environmental champion who will work for local communities instead of corporate polluters.

It is important to recognize the U.S. government’s history of taking land from Indigenous people and the significance of having an Indigenous leader bring that history, knowledge, and experience to the agency responsible for managing public lands. Her confirmation will play a role in finally bridging the gap between the federal government and Tribal communities.

Secretary Haaland holds a stellar track record of listening to science and fighting on the forefront of the climate crisis. We look forward to leadership that will prioritize implementing climate action, creating clean energy jobs, and protecting public lands for current and future generations to enjoy.”

We believe that radical change is necessary and only by transforming our political system will we create the opportunity to take bold action on climate change. We elect and cultivate environmental champions, turn election victories into policy wins, hold our lawmakers accountable, and build political power for change. We inspire hope and action and fight for equity and justice for all Californians. We are in the business of changing what’s possible.
