Oakland, CA - California state and local leaders today joined a nationwide call for bold action by Congress to address climate change and create jobs. Over 75 of the state’s elected and appointed officials - from the Governor to mayors and city council members - signed onto a letter directed to Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Schumer, Minority Leader McCarthy, and Minority Leader McConnell.

“California’s leaders are calling for aggressive action now to tackle climate change, economic inequality, and public health,” said Mary Creasman, CEO, California League of Conservation Voters. “We need Congress to pass legislation that will help create millions of jobs and transform our economy and infrastructure to be more sustainable, reduce pollution and address environmental injustices.”

The letter calls on Congressional leadership “to seize a once-in-a-generation opportunity to help our communities recover by creating and sustaining millions of good paying jobs, putting us on the path to 100% clean energy and building a more equitable and just society.”

This effort, which was spearheaded in-state by the California League of Conservation Voters and nationally by the League of Conservation Voters, is part of a larger call for bold action around climate change. The letter, which was circulated nationwide, garnered support from over 1,200 elected and appointed officials from all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Specifically, it calls for legislative action that:

Puts the U.S. on the path to 100% clean energy powering everything from the electricity grid, transportation, and buildings with reliable, affordable clean energy.

Promotes equity by ensuring at least 40% of benefits go to the communities who need it most, prioritizing just and equitable solutions being led by low income and communities of color most harmed by toxic pollution and climate change.

Incentivizes high-quality, good paying union jobs, especially in the domestic clean energy and manufacturing sectors, while supporting communities historically reliant on oil, gas, and coal jobs.
