SACRAMENTO – The California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) released the following statement in response to the outcome of Senate Bill 260, the Climate Corporate Accountability Act. The bill was held in the Senate Appropriations Committee as a two-year bill, meaning it cannot be considered until January 2022. SB 260 would have required big corporations that conduct business in California with over $1 billion in revenue to disclose their total carbon emissions in a way that is available and understandable to the public.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, CLCV:

“The California State Senate’s decision today shows just how much control corporate polluters still have in California. This is just one of a handful of critical climate bills to get shut down in the Senate this year, further cementing a dangerous pattern of delaying crucial progress. It begs the question of the Senate’s commitment to climate action. As we slip into another drought and approach wildfire season, our lives and future depend on our state government choosing people over corporate profits – we must do better.

The inconvenient truth is that we can’t solve the climate crisis if our government doesn’t hold corporations accountable. Science tells us that 100 corporations are responsible for 71 percent of global industrial carbon emissions, so no serious conversation about climate action can leave out corporate disclosures and reductions.

Polling across the state and across party lines shows unequivocally that climate action and corporate accountability is a top and urgent priority for voters. The Senate’s lack of leadership and inability to pass even baseline policies is unacceptable, especially in the state of California. There are a few opportunities left this session to act, and we call on the Senate to do the right thing. We are not seeing the prioritization of climate action that Californians deserve and demand.”

We believe that radical change is necessary and only by transforming our political system will we create the opportunity to take bold action on climate change. We elect and cultivate environmental champions, turn election victories into policy wins, hold our lawmakers accountable, and build political power for change. We inspire hope and action and fight for equity and justice for all Californians. We are in the business of changing what’s possible.
