OAKLAND, CA – The California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) released the following statement in response to the U.S. Census Bureau’s release of data from the 2020 Census.

The California Citizens Redistricting Commission (CCRC) will in part use the data collected from the Census to inform how district lines are drawn this year during redistricting efforts. Californians interested in participating can submit comments before the CCRC during public hearings across the state.

Statement from Mike Young, Political & Organizing Director, CLCV:

“We are committed to a fair, transparent, and democratic process here in California, despite Trump-sponsored attempts to sabotage the Census, despite pro-polluter gerrymandering in other states, and despite attacks on California’s uniquely non-partisan process. Redistricting in California and the resulting lines drawn this year will be the foundation of our climate fight and set our state up for either success or failure in our climate goals.

We look forward to processing this latest round of Census data with our partners in the good-government, environmental, and civil rights communities. We encourage every Californian to attend and submit comments before the CCRC, so lines are drawn as equitably as possible. Having reflective representation and a strong democracy are essential pieces of the bigger puzzle that is solving the climate crisis.”

We believe that radical change is necessary and only by transforming our political system will we create the opportunity to take bold action on climate change. We elect and cultivate environmental champions, turn election victories into policy wins, hold our lawmakers accountable, and build political power for change. We inspire hope and action and fight for equity and justice for all Californians. We are in the business of changing what’s possible.
