SACRAMENTO, CA California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement today in response to a climate disclosure proposal from the Securities and Exchange Commission. The proposed rule would require all publicly traded companies to disclose their greenhouse gas emissions and the risks they face from climate change.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, California Environmental Voters:

One hundred corporations are responsible for 71 percent of all global industrial carbon emissions, so no serious conversation about climate action can leave out corporate disclosures and reductions. Even the Securities and Exchange Commission sees the impact of carbon accountability. Their step to address it is the right one but doesn’t go far enough.

In California, we have the opportunity this year to pass Senate Bill 260, the Climate Corporate Accountability Act. The bill would require big corporations conducting business in California with over $1 billion in revenue to disclose their total carbon emissions in a way that is publicly available and understandable.

With just 8 years left to make big changes in our carbon emissions to avoid the worst of the climate crisis, this deeper and more comprehensive approach to corporate disclosures is essential. This is an opportunity for California to once again lead the way on climate action.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
